AT&T Unveils New Products for 4G LTE Network Rollout in U.S.

AT&T unveiled two new products Tuesday intended to partner with the upcoming launch of its 4G LTE network, marking the telecommunication giant's latest effort towards the highly-anticipated rollout of its next-generation wireless network. The two connectivity products--AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G and the Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G--will be available for purchase later this summer. AT&T in May announced plans to launch the LTE network this summer in five cities across the U.S. More

 

MTEL Launches HSDPA in Montenegro

Montenegrin cellco MTEL has launched a HSDPA network in three cities, with plans to extend the service to all the major cities in the country. The network was rolled out in partnership with Ericsson to Podgorica, Budva and Berane and has a maximum speed of 21Mbps. More

 

Huawei to Build WiMAX Network for Manitoba NetSet

Huawei announced that it has won a bid to build a WiMAX network for Manitoba NetSet. A two-phased project, this network will extend WiMAX coverage to rural areas of Manitoba, providing broadband Internet access to more than 5,000 new households within the first year. “There are more than 22,000 households in the southern portion of the province that do not have access to carrier-class broadband Internet services and we are committed to delivering this service to all residents of Manitoba,” said Charlie Clark, owner of I-NetLink Wireless and President of Manitoba NetSet. Clark said the company “wanted to ensure that we were able to ‘future-proof’ our network. Our selection of Huawei means that our network is fully upgradable to LTE, once the design standards are ratified.” More

 

Verizon Wireless's 4G LTE Network to Reach 100 Markets in U.S.

Verizon Wireless will hit the century mark with its 4G LTE next week, covering 100 markets in the U.S. with its speedy next-generation network. Tulsa, Okla., will be the 100th market covered by Verizon's new network, which will officially be announced on July 21. The carrier will have hit the milestone after only eight months of network rollouts, compared with the 25 months it took to cover 100 markets with its 3G network. More


Inventec CTO: Taiwan to Step Up LTE Research

Taiwan will step up research of LTE mobile technology, which has become more influential among operators around the world, said Chen Yi-ping, chief technology officer of Inventec. According to Chen, a major problem facing operators is disruption, due to a lack of radio spectrum wide enough for LTE signals, which have wavelengths of 20 MHz. A reshuffling of the radio spectrum to accommodate LTE is an issue facing nations seeking to popularize the technology, she said. As for Taiwan, the National Communications Commission may also need to work on a spectrum reshuffle, given it has allotted portions of the spectrum to operators of WiMAX, she noted. More

Verizon Innovation Center Aims to Unleash LTE's Full Potential

Though Verizon Wireless didn't exactly open the doors of its new Innovation Center in Waltham, Mass., for the first time July 12, it did have a coming out party of sorts. For the last 20 months, Verizon and its vendors' engineers have squirreled themselves away in the center's labs, inviting every manner of entrepreneur, developer and tinkerer to test out their applications, gadgets and ideas on a test LTE network built on site.  At the center's "official" opening July 12, Verizon took the opportunity to showcase some of the technology developed there.
