| SYMPOSIUM IN REVIEW |
|
Where Are BWA Investments Flowing? What Is Intel’s 2007 Vision For WiMAX?
Sriram Viswanathan, Vice President & Managing Director, Mobility Sectors, Intel Capital and General Manager, WiMAX Programs, Intel Corp. opens the convention with his first speech after appointment as Intel’s key executive working with WiMAX, and then meets with WCAI audience members.
Long a key figure in funding advanced network providers worldwide, he began both WCAI’sSymposium and the association’s semi-annual International Carrier Investment Forum. The latter is a special segment to conveneexperts from all corners of the industry’s financial and analyst community to present a wealth of essential information for anyone looking to invest in wireless, and to provide networking opportunities between investors and carriers. |
Understanding The MuniWireless Business Model
Focusing on business opportunities in building municipal wireless systems was the leading U.S. systems integrator in the field Donald B. Berryman, who is Executive Vice President of EarthLink and President of Earthlink Municipal Networks and Dianah Neff, Senior Partner of Civitium, LLC and former CIO of the City of Philadelphia. This session addressed the feasibility of the Municipal Wireless market and the business models that are being implemented in the U.S. and abroad. The panel explored the various wireless technologies being deployed, and the related risks of these selections. Public and private ownership and control at the municipal level was discussed along with the implications for traditional carriers with the current capital investment in wireless infrastructure. |
Forecasting Personal Mobile Handset Devices
Providing a preview into the future was Anand Chandrasekher, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Ultra Mobility Group, Intel Corp. |
Advanced Applications With CDMA/OFDM
Illustrating the diverse nature of the technologies featured was Anthony N. Georgiou, Chairman of The Citadel Group, who is here shown at left with WCAI President Andrew Kreig, center, and Dr. Arno J. Kosko, who is president of The Citidal Group’s subsidiary CINTECH-US and a member of WCAI’s Board of Directors. |
Wireless Industry Trends: What's Next and When?
Expert predicts and analysis came also from J.S. (Jake) MacLeod, who is Principal Vice President and CTO of Bechtel Communications. |
Sprint Nextel Keynote Luncheon
Sprint Nextel Senior Vice President for Mobile Broadband Operations Atish Gude delivers the luncheon keynote speech about the company’s vision for its WiMAX network deployment. The company is largest spectrum rights holder in the U.S., and is actively working through WCAI on such international issues as global roaming and spectrum harmonization via WCAI’s 30-member company Global Development Committee. |
WiMAX Vendor Leaders CEO Roundtable
Redline Communications President & CEO Majed Sifri, left, speakers during WCAI’s CEO panel of leading WiMAX vendors, as Airspan Networks President and CEO Eric Stonestrom, center, and Aperto Networks President and CEO Michael Pratt look on in a session moderated by LCC International and including also SR Telecom. |
Growing Mobile Broadband
Motorola Networks & Enterprise Business Vice President for Wireless Broadband Jim Welch explores the forces driving the growth of mobile broadband -- and how wireless technologies can meet their needs. |
WiMAX Breakthrough At 2.5 GHz: Launching The MovilMax System In Venezuela
Movilmax President & CEO Dick Abanto describes its historic launch on Feb. 27, 2007 of what is regarded as the first mobile WiMAX deployment in the world in the 2.5-2.7 GHz band. It will use equipment from Samsung adapted from the widely reported WiBro deployment in Korea within the 2.3 GHz band. Abanto, who is also president of Movilmax’s owner OmniVision C.A., was elected during the convention as a member of WCAI’s Board of Directors. |
WCAI Honors California Government Arnold Schwarzenegger With Leadership Award
Recognizing the initiative of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, WCAI President Andrew Kreig, right, presents the association’s annual Government Leadership Award to him via David Crane, the Governor’s special advisor on economic issues. Crane provided an overview of the Governor’s broadband policy and its impact, and also conveyed the Governor’s best wishes for the convention and regret at schedule conflicts preventing his own appearance. The governor had announced last October steps to promote broadband access and usage, ensuring that all government agencies are using the best technologies and creating a broadband task force that lets experts from government and business work together to identify and eliminate obstacles to making broadband Internet access ubiquitous in the state. The order, among other things, directs the Department of General Services to make wireless Internet access available in State buildings and increase video streaming to deliver public meetings, training materials and other state resources online. It also directs state agencies to enable VoIP technologies for business and government use, and include broadband conduit in their infrastructure planning. Details. In another area relevant to WCAI’s fast-growing enterprise applications constituencies, the governor signed an executive order last October creating the California Maritime Security Council in order to coordinate better information sharing between the federal, state and local governments at ports. |
WCAI'S Educational Sessions
WCAI’s educational sessions provide outstanding industry information. One such comment came from panel speaker William De Camp, who serves in the State of California’s Department of General Services and also as chair of the Northern California’s 700 MHz and 4.9 GHz Regional Planning Committee: “The educational benefits and networking opportunities afforded attendees at these WCAI offerings are phenomenal. I came away both satiated and delighted by the experience.” |
A Sold Out Exhibit Floor
WCAI’s International Symposium & Business Expo experienced its usual strong exhibit hall traffic. As Silicon Valley's major annual WiMAX showcase, registration for the Symposium was 1,660. |
WCAI Announces Expanded Member Benefits
Implementing guidance from WCAI’s Board of Directors, WCAI’s President Andrew Kreig announces initiatives for improving sales revenues for member companies using the economies of group action in ways parallel to those useful in government relations. Innovations include a revitalized Broadband Finance Committee that is intended to enhance investment into member companies, especially international carriers. Another initiative was a much-expanded array of companies who are leading municipal wireless systems. A comprehensive list of WCAI’s committees and publications (and eligibility criteria) is posted on WCAI’s website as a Sign-up Sheet. |
WCAI Live! Radio Show Describes Latin American Leadership In WiMAX
Pioneering launches of WiMAX services in Venezuela and Brazil and their implications for advanced services globally are discussed at a Symposium edition of WCAI Live! – the webcast produced by the Wireless Communications Association International. Seated around the table, from left to right are guests, Dick Abanto, President & CEO MovilMax, & President, OmniVision (Venezuela), José Luiz Navarro Frauendorf, Executive Director, NEOTEC (Brazil) & Co-Chair of WCAI Global Development Committee, and Tajit Mehta, Broadband Spectrum Negotiator, Sprint Nextel & Co-Chair, WCAI Global Development Committee. Next to him are WCAI Live! Co-Host and President Andrew Kreig and Co-Host Scott Draughon, producer of My Technology Lawyer Radio. Last Mile: While many of you know us as the magazine Trenchless Technology, our corporate name is actually Trenchless Technology Inc. At the time we founded Trenchless Technology in 1992, the corporate name Trenchless Technology Inc. seemed appropriate. However, our company has become much more than just Trenchless Technology -- today, we publish seven other magazines and have a successful conferences/trade show division as well. As a company, we needed a name to better reflect our presence as a media organization instead of one that has sometimes confused people into thinking that we are a contractor, manufacturer or supplier. Accordingly, we have done something about this: we have changed our legal name to Benjamin Media Inc. To all of you great readers, we are still Trenchless Technology, serving you monthly with the latest news, innovations, current issues, innovative projects and products and just talking about you, who represent the dynamic trenchless technology industry.
