3-4pm: Developing Strategies for Harmonized Regulations in Latin America

Unfavorable regulatory environment has often been blamed for delays in the commercial network deployment plans of many Latin American players. Postponed spectrum auctions and resistance to renewing spectrum licenses are only some of the problems facing the industry in the region. This session will look at the current regulatory environment in the 2.5 GHz, 3.5 GHz and other major 4G bands in Latin America and provide an update on the upcoming spectrum auctions for the next-generation technology. Strategies for harmonizing the regulatory environment across the region will also be discussed.

  • Moderator: Tajit Mehta, Spectrum Negotiator, Clearwire

  • Rene Bustillo, Consultant, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Bolivia)
  • Luiz Fernando Fauth, Advisor to the Board of Directors, ANATEL (Brazil)
  • Jimena Saavedra, Executive President, Multivision (Bolivia)

4-5pm: 4G Market Opportunities in Latin America

Latin America has maintained its strong economic position despite global financial crisis and remains one of the fastest-growing markets for 4G technologies. As more consumers and businesses integrate technology into their daily lives and operations, the demand for wireless service is rapidly increasing. This session will look at 4G network deployments in Latin America and examine market opportunities in the region.

  • Moderator: Caroline Gabriel, Research Director, Rethink Technology Research

  • Alejandro Mayagoitia, President, ANSITEL (Mexico)

5-6pm: 4G Investment Strategies in Latin America

Attracting sufficient investment for commercial network deployments remains a challenge in Latin America despite the accelerating demand for wireless broadband access. Lack of sufficient spectrum and unfavorable regulatory environment often stall the flow of investment in this broadband-hungry region. This session will look at the available options for financing 4G network deployments and examine alternative funding opportunities available to wireless broadband operators in Latin America.

  • Moderator: Berge Ayvazian, Senior Consultant, Heavy Reading

  • Gabriel Perez, WiMAX Network Director, Movilmax (Venezuela)
  • Ron Reich, Sector Director, Wireless Infrastructure, Intel Capital
  • Randall Schwartz, Principal Consultant, Wireless 20/20
