Backhaul Concerns Raise Fixed Wireless Profile At WCA 2008
With the backdrop of WCA 2008 comments by WiMAX proponent Sprint Nextel that backhaul shortcomings are a factor in delaying its 4G services launch, fixed wireless leaders described the advantages of land-based fixed wireless systems. Solutions providers were from FiberTower, Ceragon, and TeraGo Networks joined in a session entitled, “Fixed Wireless As Your Network Partner: Myths and Realities,” with a end-user customer viewpoint from Qwest Government Solutions. The providers said that microwave backhaul is a highly cost-effective alternative to fiber and copper, and its availability and capacity have far less weather interference than other materials. They said that the technology meets increasing demand for high bandwidth. Sprint has been supportive of innovative microwave backhaul and Verizon and AT&T have investments in existing infrastructures that can easily integrate microwave.

WCA Fixed Wireless Alliance Charts Agenda On Business Development
WCA's Fixed Wireless Alliance leadership unveiled during the convention an ambitious agenda for business development in the fixed wireless bands above 10 GHz. Bryan Boyd, CEO of TeraGo Networks and the chairman of WCA's Fixed Wireless Alliance, led the meeting focused on major initiatives in business development/customer awareness and regulatory work, particularly government buildout deadlines. In both areas, the Alliance will work with Bryan Tramont, the most recent former FCC Chief of Staff and now a partner at Wilkinson Barker Knauer. He discussed at the meeting a comprehensive Network Security Initiative for federal, state and local governments. A task force to implement this initiative will be Co-Chaired by First Avenue Network Solutions President Joseph Sandri and Charles Mathias, with responsibilities in Government Programs & Affairs within Bechtel Federal Telecom's Washington, DC office. Further developments will be reported in the Bulletin and shared amongst members of the Alliance, which is open to WCA member companies with stakes in the bands. Those who are not already on WCA's circulation list for the group should contact Events and Programs Coordinator Meredith Cicerchia.

IDT plans an innovative presentation in conjunction with the CEO of its affiliate Stratsoft. Other speakers include the pioneering "father of point-to-multipoint" broadband wireless, traveling to WCA's convention once again from Germany, this time as an employee of Ericsson following its acquisition of Marconi Communications. The moderator is the founder of SkyLight Research, a preeminent analyst of trends in fixed wireless that has added mobile research to its portfolio.
